MARTIN JANECKY

ARTIST, VIRTUOSO, LEADING NEW GENERATIONS

2014 FEATURED ARTIST

At the age of thirteen, Martin Janecky began blowing glass in the factory where his father was a technician. Born into a family of glassmakers, he spent four years at the Secondary Glass Art School in Novy Bor, Czech Republic, further honing his skill at glassworks and studio jobs with the ambition of making sculptures. Garnering a battery of techniques and impressive proficiency for one so young, he became the go-to guy for fabrication and trouble-shooting.

Traveling around the world, he made his way to the States as a demonstrating artist at the Corning Museum of Glass and eventually to William Morris’ hotshop where he served as assistant. Using a combination of traditional techniques with contemporary tools and methods, he deftly works both the inside and outside of the blown bubble. Recipient of the Salvador Dalí World Prize by the European Union of Arts, Janecky creates representational sculptures of musical instruments and vintage-inspired circus performers characterized by a haunting gothic lyricism.

Recognized as a virtuoso of figurative glass, he exhibits the caliber as well as evokes the poetry of his Eastern European heritage, while imbuing traditional subjects with a Millennial intensity. Making the Warwick Glass Studio in Fairbanks, Alaska, his homebase, Janecky visits Prague regularly and goes on tour as a much-in-demand visiting artist.
